Play Counter App
« on: August 26, 2016, 01:12:31 pm »
I hope I'm not breaking any forum rules posting this, if so, admins feel free to delete this post.

My son has played on INFC football teams the past 5 years, and last year I volunteered to count plays at our games.  As a software developer my first thought was "I bet there's an app for that".  To my surprise there was only 2 apps in the Apple app store, and neither one would give me the options or reporting that I was looking for.  So I wrote my own.

Platinum Play Counter is free to download from the Apple app store for you iPhone or iPad.  It's saved me a tremendous amount of headache trying to keep up with play counting, and I hope it can help other users and teams as well.  If you download the app and use it, I would appreciate any comments, complaints, or ideas for additional features.  You can email me direct from my website listed below, or leave me a message here on the forums and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks.

Hey can I ask where you got the pic that you used that shows the players?

Very cool app. I went and downloaded and bought the extras. Seems very efficient. Just so others see there is also an option to remove people from the list once their 12 plays are met. Will see tomorrow how well it works in real time, but just messing around and getting familiar with it and am so far impressed. Will definitely recommend.

I have an Android. Meaning I don't have iTunes. That sucks. Looks like a helpful app though.

A friend of mine took that back in 2014 and shared it with me on Facebook.  I loved the pic so when I was looking for an image for the main view of the app I asked her if I could use it.  She happily agreed.  I told her in return I'd buy her a car once the app reached a million dollars.  I'm pretty sure she's expecting a hot wheels car.

I ran the pic through a few filters in Photoshop and that's what came out.  FYI, that's my son on the left, first season of tackle that year.

Thanks LeaguesBoss, I appreciate your support.  The app is a hobby of mine, much to my wife's dismay when I stay up late trying to get new ideas to work.  I'm in no way expecting this things to make any good money, I really just want to be able to help others out that are in the same play counter position I'm in.  I wouldn't mind if it made enough to cover the $99 annual Apple Developer fee thorough.  So far, after being in the app store for a year, I'm about halfway there.   ;)

Speaking of play counting, it's the first game of the season today, I better get going before I'm late.  Good luck to all you coaches, parents, and players.  I hope everyone has a fun, enjoyable, and safe season.

I tried it out today. What I found is that I need to bring my iPad. Doing it on the phone was tough!

Yes, I totally agree.  The app was originally written as an iPad only app, mainly due to the screen real estate needed to easily count plays.  During the off season I added iPhone support to the app mainly to get the app out in front of as many users as possible.  I personally use an iPad Mini on the sideline.  For me its just the right size.  Using the app on an iPhone is basically the same as on an iPad, but there's a lot more scrolling in the iPhone due to it's small screen size.

Our play counter used this app. The coaches loved all the feed back it provided them!

Thanks Longbeach, I'm so glad it's helping your team.  Rumor has it that the app was directly responsible for your win this week, is that correct?   ;)    I'm totally kidding, but seriously, I love hearing feedback like this.  It makes all the late nights I stayed up coding seem worthwhile.  Good luck to your team, I hope they go all the way this season.

Like the app too.....reason why I asked where that pic came from is that it kind of looks like my boy running the ball lol. So I was just curious.

The game was against Owasso in 2014.  Can't remember which Owasso team it was, but it would have been 3rd grade I believe.

The picture was take late in the 2014 season when my son was in 3rd grade.  Let's just say I didn't name the app after a Ford F150 Platinum Edition.  ;)

If it is your son, looks like I may own him a car some day as well.  Only $999,850 to go.  :)
