Kickoff and Kickoff Return
« on: August 16, 2016, 11:27:18 pm »
I am a 3rd grade coach and I have 4-5 possible 2 stripe players on a team of 15 players. The rules state that no 2 stripers are allowed on kickoff or kickoff return. What happens if I only have 10 eligible players for a kickoff or kickoff return?

You can kickoff and return with fewer than 11 players.  Not ideal, but you can do it.  On side kick on kickoff that will help.

Bartlesville had this issue a few years ago. What they did is got permission from the INFC for their 2 striper to kick the ball and then run off the field. So they basically covered with 10 guys

Most 3rd grade teams still onside so kicking off with 10 isn't really a big deal

Thanks CoachSMC and NewToFootball. I may have to just go with 10 players if it comes down to that. I have a 1 striper that can kick that ball real good.

Wait... so a 2-Striper cannot kick the ball?  Where in the rulebook does it say this?

2 striper can kick an extra point but he cannot be on kickoffs nor can he punt.

This is Pg 25-26 of the rule book.  Bold/Underlined text answers question about where it's found.

B. Two Striper:
1. Cannot have more than 3 two stripe players on the field
of play at any one time.
2. Can only be a lineman in a down position, 3 or 4 point
stance.
3. Cannot be on the kick-off or kick-return team.

Offense
1. Must play on the interior offensive line and may never
be in a position to be eligible for a pass. Note: On an
unbalanced line, the tackle becomes an end if
uncovered making him illegal.
2. Will be allowed in the backfield to kick extra points or
field goals only. The kick must be a declared, a fumble
or fake will be declared a dead ball.
If the kick is blocked
and remains behind the line of scrimmage, a Two Striper
may advance the ball.
3. Two stripers cannot advance the ball in a designed play
but may advance after the recovery of a DEFENSIVELY
CAUSED fumble.
Defense
1. Must play on the defensive line and will not line up any
wider than head-up with the tight end’s normal position
whether a tight end is lined up on that side or not.
2. Will be allowed to return a fumble or pass interception.

I've been working on home regimens for the parents to do with my 2 stripers to try to get them under 100 pounds. I have 3 players who weigh 103, 106, and 106 pounds respectively. I have 1 player who weighs around 130 pounds. I didn't want to have my starting QB on kickoff or kickoff return but it looks like I might have to.

It really isn't this hard.   Just put some of your better tacklers on the side of the field you are going to onside the ball.  Send a fast kid to blow up the first kid they see, and have the 2nd fastest kid wrap up the ball.  You will have a better than 50/50 chance of getting the ball back every time.  In fact you really only need about 5 kids on kickoff if done right.  The backside of the kickoff team isn't even going to be in on the action if you onside.

Now on kickoffs you draw the short straw if your QB is the one you want to use to field on side kicks because if you don't practice special teams a lot your QB is going to get SMOKED!   Have your front line on kickoff return actively looking to block/hit the "gunners" on the kickoff team, and to keep the gunners off your "hands team."

In fact, I wish at this age if a kid is in a fielding position he was declared protected and the ball whistled dead if secured.  Very vulnerable position to be in while trying to field an onside punt and having another kid running full speed head hunting.

Last year I saw a team that never fielded cleanly an on side kick and got several players SMOKED.  It wasn't until the score was out of reach that team B started to kick deep.
