Week 2- AKA Dead week- This week always makes the season feel like one big false start. My .02
Not a ton of super intriguing matchups this week, but some good ones on the docket no less.
Division 1
SAND SPRINGS BLACK vs UNION SILVER - This one almost got my GOTW for div 1. Watched bits and pieces of the SS BLACK/BA Plat Game last week, and liked what I saw. Someone mentioned the LB core and they were spot on. #8 is all over the field and #0 isn't far behind. I may regret this one if the Sandites can fix the blocking issues I saw later in the game, as they had some prime opportunities to tie that ball game late in BA and couldn't capitalize. U-Silver started the year off with an offensive explosion against O silver, and although we scrimmaged their D and had some good success, scrimmages are only scrimmages. If they are what I think they are, this team will fly around and make plays if you don't get a hat on a hat. If SS can shore up that protection/blocking scheme it will be a battle, but I have the Redskins winning 27-13
OWASSO SILVER vs BIXBY RED- Both teams coming off losses looking for a bounce back win. Owasso Silver has plenty of talented players, just need to gel and put it all together. I liked what I saw in practice and if they can bring that level of execution to gameday, they can compete with anyone. Need to fly around on D and get amped up, if they can do that they could pull an upset. Big Red taking an L week one in a game most picked them to win, is probably not the opponent anyone wants to face. Scoring wasn't the issue so much as keeping the other team off the board. I heard the turnover battle was 4-1 not in their favor, and we all know that's probably the number one stat when looking at Ws vs Ls. Protect the ball and it might have been a different outcome. Either way, that one is in the rearview mirror and this team isn't the type to stay on the mat after one good punch. I expect a healthy win for BXB RED 32-12
SAPULPA vs BROKEN ARROW BLACK - GOTW Div 1- In preseason, this didn't register as a matchup with huge significance. But with the stunning loss at home by BA, and with Sapulpa taking care of business like I assumed they would, these teams may be more even than we all probably thought. Honestly this is a must win game for either team in my opinion. Sapulpa coming out of AA last year had a reputation as a salty team with talented athletes, just not enough to get it done in AA. Well, a year of growth and kids getting comfortable in the system, they look like they can be competitive in 6A football. Overall I like what they do offensively, and if they can clean up coverage and assignment breakdowns, they have enough talent to hang in there against anyone. Win this one, and the Cheiftains will certainly have their playoff chances in their hands. BA Black coming off that loss to Jenks White may be a wounded animal backed into a corner. I don't discount that Jenks White was out to avenge the last 3 years of bad losses to the tigers, so the score isn't as much what's got me apprehensive about this team. I watched most of that game live, and I just didn't see the pop or explosiveness out of the team as a whole. They have always been known for smashmouth offense, hard nosed defense, big blocks, tough runs, and opportune play calling. There wasn't alot of that last week. I may be wrong and it'll hurt my pickem championship chances, but I think it might be my week to be Mr I told you so. Chieftains win 19-16
JENKS BLACK vs BARTLESVILLE- Look out there's a new sheriff in town... I am not too proud to admit when I'm wrong and eat some crow. These guys rose to the occasion last week and beat a perennial powerhouse. It's not like I said they had no chance, but I genuinely was surprised at the outcome. Well now you are firmly in the driver's seat of your own destiny. The D still needs to clean up some leaks, but overall they are a team with their arrow pointing directly up. Should be a fun one when they play Jenks White later this season. Bartlesville took the L against Sapulpa but did put a few points on the board. They have their work more than cut out for them in this one. Expect Jenks to take care of business here pretty comfortably 32-6
JENKS WHITE vs BROKEN ARROW PLATINUM - This ones a tough game and I almost went with the GOTW here. I just am not sure about the availability of Cowboy, and whether he is getting the needed reps in practice to gel in that wing offense. If Platinum can keep it close, this one could go either way. Their stud mlb/rb being on the field is the only way that happens, and I'm just not sure if hes going to be 100%. Even if that was the case, Jenks White will be a tall order. At this point its pretty well a consensus that Jenks White is on track to take the 1 seed in Div 1, and only they can shoot themselves in the foot. I'm not saying they're unbeatable by any means, but with #22 patroling the field on both sides of the ball you always stand a good chance to come out on top. Good assignment defense, gang tackling, and a knack for turnovers put the defense on the map as well. Jenks gets the win at home 24-8
Division 2
BROKEN ARROW CHROME vs JENKS MAROON - Got the chance to talk to the Chrome coaches doing some scouting last weekend, and they were doing their homework. I fully expected a big win against Bixby White last week, and was shocked to hear that White was winning down the stretch into the final minutes of the game. Haven't watched any film and only got a snippet of a breakdown from a buddy who watched, but I assume they have fixed whatever had them misfiring in that game. It probably won't matter in this one, cause you got the 1-2 punch of #5 and #13 coming straight downhill at you this week. Don't believe the narrative, these guys have this power wishbone offense running on all cylinders. And if you get lulled to sleep by the power game, they will pop a PA pass to #30 or leak Cato out the backfield and hit him on the run. It may not be the greatest show on turf, but until we get the dubya in a game against them, they have my utmost respect, regardless of jersey color scheme. The wolfpack howls 39-6
MUSKOGEE vs OWASSO WHITE- The Gee is huge! That center has to be 6-3" 275 or more, and that's not the only one. Did I mention they have plenty of speed in the backfield/secondary? Regardless of the outcome against Bixby they are a formidable opponent. We look forward to the challenge and the drive up to the Indian Bowl. Rolling with my squad. Might bring the kitchen sink or leave it at home, don't know yet.
BROKEN ARROW SILVER vs UNION BLACK - GOTW Div 2- BA got off to a rough start last week, in a game I thought they had a chance to win. Just couldn't seem to get the bus rolling. Not that I'm jealous, cause drawing a first week opponent like maroon is tough for anyone. This week they'll need to start off netting positive yards, and work on grinding the O til the big plays come naturally. I foresee them bouncing back here in a big way, but what type of defense they'll face is a mystery to us all. Union Black didn't scrimmage in the 2nd session, so it could be a blessing or a curse. They certainly added another talented athlete to the stable, so it never hurts. Will most likely be in attendance at this one unless it conflicts with our schedule, and if so I'll have an eye in the sky. I'm going with my gut and taking Silver in a tight one 16-15
SAND SPRINGS GOLD vs BIXBY WHITE- Bixby White almost pulled off the W in their first game out the gate, and no one saw that coming. Overall I can't imagine how hard it is to install a new offense and D to mostly new kids in 7th grade. Hats off to these coaches for putting in the time and giving their best effort. I didn't see the game but judging by the score they have these kids buying in. That's a testament to the kids and coaches both. The golden Sandites are better than the score indicated last week. #22 is a gamer and fought til the final whistle, as did the rest of their squad. I think they'll get back on track in this one with a hard fought win 22-14
BIXBY BLUE vs --bye-- Get healthy JA. We have a date with you fellas in two weeks.
