Heard through the grapevine a few teams are going to be cut this year from several organizations. Don't know how they do it in other organizations, but a little birdy was going around telling people that their kid may have new coaches this coming year. The numbers sound stupidly large as well. I don't have a problem with large numbers once you start competitive or school ball, but at the recreational level carrying close to 30 kids is absurd. 30 kids practicing 4 nights a week while many will get 7 plays. Come on now, this is silly. Did they even ask if the teams that are not being cut want to take on a lot more kids? We only had around 4 coaches last year with our team, with those 4 most nights not being able to make it due to their real life jobs. With 30 kids that means each coach is with 7-8 kids minimum. The costs are different from city to city, but once you pay for pads, helmet and other equipment it looks like football might have to take a backseat to other sports.
30 kids needing 7 plays each
We averaged around 60 plays I think last year if memory serves correct.
I know that kickoff, punt, qb taking a knee all count as plays. But, should they?
I don't want to see again this year someone call a timeout to get a player in the game, and watch the qb take a knee to get a player his mandatory plays counted.
Hey INFC what about giving teams a price break for carrying more than 20 kids.
Seems fair that if you are going to be a part time player you shouldn't have to pay full time playing money.
Also, I think that the INFC should send out a letter to all parents letting them know that the league will be dropping teams and adding more players to each remaining team. Explain to the parents that a lot of kids that used to get significant playing time will now be minimum play players (MPP). I don't think having the coaches explain this to parents is appropriate for volunteer coaches. And, if parents go into the season knowing the circumstances I think it will stop a lot of hurt feelings. Just my 2 cents.
