Scrimmages: First Round...What Did You See?
« on: August 14, 2021, 11:34:01 pm »
Our boys played at Claremore Sequoyah tonight, and 6th grade is stacking up to be tough - top to bottom this year.   I think our coaches are great and I am happy with how the boys performed our first time out.  A few observations on the teams out there.

Wagoner.  Very well coached, athletic team.  Have a player in the back field (black jersey for those that were there), that knows the game well; and was hard to stop. Note:  I will be curious to see if he makes weight when the season starts.  He's a complete stud, but I think I call BS on him being under 130.  No way.

Owasso black is the real deal.  Big, loud, very physical team that seemed to be blowing almost everyone up out there on both sides of the ball.  23 in the back field is an absolute freak.  If he is under 160 it's just barely, so like CS black jersey, I'd like to see what the scale says when he weighs in.   Truly, one of the best I've ever seen at this age.  Wow.

Berryhill... fast, fast, fast.  Good coaching, and players that flew to the ball.  They will be tough to score on this season.

Sequoyah - some good athletes.  Nice misdirection plays and definitely have some speed.

We didn't square up against Bishop Kelly but they looked solid.  Saw them on offense a little against Owasso black, and they scored a couple of times.  Not sure anyone else did at all.  Watched them play defense during our break against Wagoner and they shut them down completely.  Appear big, athletic and well coached.

How were the other scrimmages?  What did you see?

Our boys moved up this year after winning the AA championship last season; so we didn't quite know what to expect from our first interaction with "A" teams yesterday.  For the most part, we were pleased with what we saw on both sides of the ball; and look forward to getting back to practice this week to tune a few things up.

O vs. Berryhill:  We didn't get to see Berryhill last year, but remember them well from 2 seasons ago.  Fast, well coached athletes who know how to finish a tackle.  We made it hard on ourselves at center, but apart from that - they definitely slowed us down.

D vs. Sequoyah:  We were not familiar with this team, but they showed up to play; and got us a couple of times with the counter.

O vs. Owasso Black:  Big, scrappy, athletic, well coached team.  23 is the whole package, and will be a handful for any team this season.  We had lost the "jitters" by this game, and were able to put up 4 scores; but our boys were pretty banged up afterward.

D vs. Wagoner:  Good, physical team.  We watched them play earlier in the evening, and had made a few adjustments for the "black jersey" you mentioned.  You're right - that kid can play.  I'm not sure he's 130 either, but he was absolutely a force out there.  Fun match-up.

I was unable to attend any of the 6th grade scrimmages, thanks JR and G&W21 for your insights.  Would love to hear from others that had the opportunity to see some football Saturday. Love this time of year and best of luck to everyone!

Bixby Blue we played D
Moved the ball well and passed effectively
Big kids and great schemes

Owasso Red we played D
Strong athletic team
Will be a problem come season

Union Black we played O
Gave us a lot of fits with size
Their quickness was elite

Ft Gibson we played O
They are big up front
Very disciplined in their attack

I believe this is going to be a very exciting year with the parity that 6th grade brings

Played D - against O-black - very well coached, QB has a great arm and receivers will make the catch.
Played O- against Catoosa great group of players, coaches got a good line .
Played O- against - Bishop - they are really physical and fly to the football really impressed with there defensive play.
Played D- against Berryhill- They have a great group, i have always liked watching this group but im partial to the little schools, this team will bring it!

We have some work to do, but looking forward to the season, Good luck Coaches and God Bless!

All the teams at Claremore Seq did a good job. The kids played hard and showed great sportsmanship.

I thought our Bulldogs did a pretty good job, still room for improvement which I did see this week in practice. BK did a really good job on Defense. Owasso has some very talented skill kids and their QB has a very good arm. Catoosa has some very good sized lineman and their QB is tuff. Berryhill, simply put is still a very good football team.  Didn't see much of Seq but I did notice quite a bit of speed when they were on offense.

We do have a big kid at RB right now. He is weighing right at 131-132, hoping his weight will drop just a little more and he can stay there. He may be Our other RB was in quarantined but we should have him back this weekend.

Good luck to everyone this weekend and on into Week 1.
