Can someone please explain?
« on: October 31, 2016, 02:27:04 pm »
Can someone please explain how the Post Season Tournament is seeded?  Two teams from the same Division are the overall 2nd and 5th seeds.  The 2-seed finished the season with a record of 3-5 and lost head-to-head to the 5-seed, which finished 5-3.  Does anyone know how they came up with these rankings?

They go on Points. Team with most points #1 seed, 2nd most #2 Seed etc.

Record  & head to head don't matter for PST. The way they seed it is just the easiest way to do it. Hard enough to do in with Div's top 3 way ties in playoffs. Imagine figuring that out with 15+ teams. Take forever.

If you're talking about Total Points from the Standings page, 2-seed has -2 points and 5-seed has +9 points...

I disagree. i did it in about 10 minutes for 7th grade. My bracket is 99% the same as the way it turned out. I simply flipped the two BA teams (BA Bronze and Titanium) so that BA Bronze and Bishop Kelley who played during the regular season didnt have to play each other.

Since this is my last year coaching I may offer to help out at the iNFC office next year and do the brackets. I love doing brackets (my minor in college was Church Recreation)

I did 6th grade in about 10 minutes also, but apparently I don't have the correct formula.  Anyone else have any idea what criteria they use?

Well that's how 5th grades is except some reason South Tulsa should be #10 and Bixby White #11. But other than that there #1-16 in order by points.

Now why 6th idk

LOL. Ya, the explanation has to be something logistical. Like a team couldn't play on a certain night or had some other conflict. Outside of the two Jenks teams, everyone else is within a seed or two of where you might argue they could be.

1. Bixby Blue 4-3 (6-3)
2. Jenks Black 3-5 (lost to Bixby White)
3. Union Black 4-3 (6-3)
4. Edmond 3-4 (4-5)
5. Bixby White 5-3
6. Owasso Black 3-4 (5-4)
7. BA Bronze 3-4 (3-6)
8. Sapulpa 2-5 (2-7)
9. Pryor 2-5 (2-7)
10. Sand Springs 3-6 (AA)
11. Bishop Kelley 2-5 (2-7)
12. Jenks Maroon 3-4 (4-5)
13. Metro 1-8 (AA)
14. BA Gold 0-7 (1-8)
15. Catoosa 2-7 (AA)

so ya, there are little things like Catoosa beat Metro and finished with a better record and BK beat Pryor and finished with the same record, but those are minor one or two place seedings. But the two Jenks teams seem like 5 seed places off as both look like they should be in the 6/7 range, yet one is 2 and one is 12.

Probably doesn't matter in a double elimination tourney, but it is odd.

After reaching out multiple times, here is the answer I got from an INFC Official:

"Seedings for the PST are determined by only two factors: Division wins and Total Points, both from the Divisional Standings page.  Each Division Win counts for 2 points and then Total points are added or subtracted to give a final point total, which will be used to seed teams in order greatest to least."

Here's the kicker, they seeded all teams after Week 8, they didn't even factor in the final games of the regular season...Can you imagine if they seeded and set the Playoff brackets before the season was over!  He said they do it that way for time constraints, but like I and CoachSMc said, it takes all of 10 minutes to seed and I was using more than only 2 factors.  I know there are Grade Directors for each individual grade, surely they could have taken an extra 10 minutes to accurately seed each team based on an entire season, but if not, let me know and I'll volunteer to do it next season.  Or, just do a blind draw, at least then everyone knows that it's random going in.

Anyway, all that being said, our boys will show up and play whatever team they decide we should play.  Our team is just excited to extend their season and play more football.  After all, it's about the kids on the field!

Good luck to all Players and Coaches in the Playoffs and Post-Season Tournaments!

I would assume we have having to delay much of the tournament until Saturday (with a boatload of games Saturday and Sunday) because of the lone team from Edmond?

Guess its just beating a dead horse, but just so you know, this explanation does not match the seedings either.

Bixby White before the final game of season
4-3 (8pts)
145 PF vs 109 PA  (36pts)
Total points = 44

Jenks Black before the final game of season
3-4 (6pts)
117PF vs 103PA (14pts)
Total points = 20

#1 Seed Bixby Blue would also of only had 20pts. I didn't check any other teams.

The discrepancy has been addressed by the league.  The seeding is no longer indicated on the bracket.  Problem solved.

LOL!  Now that the matchups were set based off of their seeding, taking the seeding off changes everything!

Wow, I guess that fixes everything!  Just take the seeds off and they'll never know!

What's funny is we addressed it Sunday evening about 6:30, as soon as the brackets came out.  They stalled and stalled, kept saying they would look into it.  Then Tuesday they admit that it was wrong but said it was too late to do anything about it...it would almost be comical if it didn't have such an effect on the outcome for a bunch of 6th graders trying to end their season on a positive note.

It is what it is, our boys are looking forward to lining up against a quality opponent tonight.  Good luck to all teams in their respective Post-Seasons!
