5 yard contact
« on: November 05, 2022, 11:59:49 pm »
Is bumping, jamming etc allowed in the first 5yards as long as ball is not in the air?

BK,
From what I have been told by several refs this year
A defender can can make contact with the receiver in the first 5 yards.
( jam the reciever) the defender cannot hold the receiver.

I was curious on a play we had. We jammed a guy at about 3-4 yards and got flagged. It was the other side of the field so wasn’t sure if they were saying ball was in the air or not but the ref on our side said that’s not a rule and I was a little taken back by it. I was pretty sure I’ve seen that talked about in games before that’s allowed. If that’s the case DB shouldn’t be allowed to jam the WR. Didnt make sense to me

Had no effect on the game I just always like knowing the rules.

I make it a point to ask the ref on my side if we can jam reciever.
My DB were always undersized. I was never told no.
Heck we even had a corner knock the receiver down when the ball was snapped. Other coach complained and ref told him it was not against the rules
