Scrimmage Week 2
« on: August 21, 2016, 10:27:40 am »
I sat through 3 rounds of scrimmages yesterday. Definitely saw some good things, some bad things, and some things that made you shake your d@mn head.

ATOR 10am

Owasso Red- will def. be a solid team. Didn't see what I expect from them, but it's early and the kids are still trying to feel out the coaches and vice versa. Still expect a lot from this team, but they might go down a little on my "Top 10" list.
Catoosa- I think the entire line is taller than Strat. I realize that's not say much, but mark my words this team will be in the playoffs.
Sand Springs- Biggest thing that stood out is passing game. Kid can throw, and they have some boys that will catch the ball. Will have to play some cut throat football in their Div. to make it in the playoffs.
Bartlesville Blue - It's early I know, but still a lot of work to be done. Should have a winning season in Div 3, but will it be enough for a playoff spot?
Lincoln Christian Black - Little guys with lots of speed. They can take a hit and pop up. Better get your lineman ready of they don't get hands on them quick, these guys will fly around a hit yah.
Bixby Red- I swear that coach is probably the biggest @ssho!e out there, and if he gets onto my kid one more time.......................   ;)

ATOR 6pm

Jenks White- I'm gonna finish the rest of the teams in this group then come back and finish this because I need to bite my tounge.
BA Black- The coach wasn't to happy after scrimmages I don't think. I definitely think they have a lot of talent and didn't show much of what they had. Sold team that still has a lot more gas in the tank.
Claremore Black - If I remember right this team started strong last year then struggled late in the season. It took them awhile to get started last night, but they do have a lot of potential to be a strong team. Definitely got better as the night went on.
Bixby Platinum- Keep workin hard. I expect to see you in the playoffs.
Jenks Maroon- (I think) Have a shifty little runner. Don't remember a lot about this team.
Glenpool- I want to remind everyone this team is AA (cough, cough Jenks White) not to belittle this team but because these kids truly gave everything they had last night. These kids took some BIG shots, they gave some BIG shots that left kids down and sent them out for a play or two. I don't think there is an ounce of quit in this team. Keep working hard guys, regroup this year and you will be just fine.
..........Now back to Jenks White- Don't let me mislead anyone. This is a team "stacked" with good athletes. However, last night I was a little thrown off. First scrimmage they were on Defense against Glenpool, and man did they start BIG. Huge hits, huge sacks, even bigger celebrations every single play. As a coach, I realize when it's time to take a step back and put in my second string, because even though we all need the practice, there's a time and a place and this round of the scrimmage wasn't it. I think it stood out the most because I NEVER saw the same hype for the rest of the night. Offensively, not as strong and that was the damper for this team. Everyone knows the saying, "Don't peak too early" and last night was the perfect visual of that. With my rant over, I still say one of the better teams in the league and will continue to be for some years, good kids, good coaches, but can you maintain the hype when it matters most?

ATOR 8pm

Bixby Blue- Same good kids plus a lot more. One of the toughest schedules in the league no doubt, but these Blue Spartans will find a way!
Owasso White- Is that you my old BA Silver nemesis?? This team was better than I expect with all the moving of teams. This Owasso team may be smaller than Red but if they play each other it's a dog fight for best in the city.
Jenks Silver- Saw some moments of good things from this team. Just workin out the kinks early in season. Don't remember if they are new or were a team last year, but they will win some games.
Union Black- not as great of a showing this week as you had last week. Late game may have been the factor not sure or if the big guy on the sidelines in a cast had something to do with it. Hate seeing kids get hurt early in season.
Sapaulpa Blue- don't remember a ton because we left early, but not too shabby on defense.
Union ??- had a quick little running back. Decent team.

Lots of scouting going on. It's good to see everyone. Hope everyone has a great season with no injuries!! Good luck to all.

I usually don't do this but had to bc I know a lot of coaches and players over there at Jenks.

@LeaguesBoss-I was also at the scrimmage and saw it completely different. I was a player all the way through college and have also been coaching for 16yrs. I understand everyone is entitled to their own opinions but think you missed the boat on this one. Football is all about big hits, big plays, and playing with emotions. When have you every seen a top team in youth and all the way up to the pros not play like that. I really don't think a team should half ass it no matter who they are playing. This is not powder puff, this is football. There are a few things that stood out about your post...you said "As a coach, I realize when it's time to take a step back and put in my second string, because even though we all need the practice, there's a time and a place and this round of the scrimmage wasn't it." How can you say something like this when you're not a coach? Do you know what their second sting is? Or what they were using the scrimmage for? Bc if you really watched Jenks like I did last night after hearing about them and watching them. Here's what I saw. I saw a Jenks team that played the game the way any top team in this league and all the way up to the pros would. Let's take TYAA, Union, BA, and any top team in this league and they play like that. They go hard all the time and play with a lot of emotions. I think the coaches did step back bc if you saw and heard the coaches they told the boys to stop talking and just play. Plus if you were really watching they did sub in and out kids, so don't know how you would know what there second string is. As a coach we all use scrimmages for different things so to say what you said make no sense. Some teams don't even scrimmage, some only scrimmage once, then some have their own scrimmage like TYAA does. Another thing to think about if you were really watching the game like a coach is they really only got off maybe 10-16plays. I do think Glenpool has some pieces and will make some noise in the AA division. What really needs to happen and I have thought this for years is the INFC needs to do better job at matching teams up in the scrimmage. Think this is why teams like TYAA holds their own scrimmage. No way should an AA team be going against a top team bc in the end the scrimmage is pointless for both teams. As you saw last night. Glenpool was unable to run plays and Jenks really didn't get to compete. A scrimmage at any level is to work on what you need to and get better. At the same time I don't think a team should half ass it either. A team should bring it no matter who they are playing. I have been around football for a long time and what I saw was a team trying to impose his will on another team. Any team I have been a part of as a player or coach this is what you are trying to do. You want to control the game and I feel like Jenks did that from the beginning to the end.

As far as your comments about their offense I really don't know what game you were watching bc I think they had two or more TD's on both BA and Claremore. They moved the ball very well and have plenty of playmakers it looks like. Plus it looked like they had different formations and seem to be able to move players around. The only time I saw them struggle was when they had a bad snap or a missed assignment. But seemed to come right back after that.

As for as hype and don't peak to early. After watching them they aren't hype. They have a bunch of playmakers, and will be a tough team this year. Don't think as a coach and being around football as long as I have I would make the comment don't peak to early. They have plenty of playmakers, plenty of formations, throw and run the ball, and their defense is stout. I pretty sure that they didn't show everything and will get even better with all the talent they have.

Liked what I saw and think this Jenks White team will make some noise if they keep playing like they are. Look forward to watching a lot of football and good luck to everyone this season!

@Raider Nation-Come on man! :) I know you like to stir the pot and make stuff interesting and it's all in good fun you say, but to say a team is bullying another team is wrong. The boys over there at Jenks White were just playing hard and with a lot emotion. You're part of TYAA right? Well I've seen all the teams over there play pretty similar and have for many years. As far as playing hard and with emotion. I have seen a lot of TYAA teams over the years and have seen some teams bark like a dog at players. I have also seen a bunch of TYAA teams run up the score and not let off the gas. So are you saying that those teams are bullying teams? Bc I never know you know football and know you would never tell your boys to go half ass...I know you wouldn't. I love the way TYAA plays football and think that is what sets them apart and why that organization wins year in and year out in the INFC ans Sooner Classic. The point I was trying make with my post is that you should give it your all no matter who you're playing. Both Glenpool and Jenks did that. Glenpool has some pieces just feel Jenks White is the better team. I think any team that is giving it 100 and playing with emotion is playing the right way. That's why I love to come watch the Bulldogs play too. I really think this got blown out of proportion and that's why I had to say something. Bc just like people stereo type TYAA I think its wrong. As coaches all you are trying to do is teach these boys to give 100% in anything they do and try to help them become a young man.

Ilovefootball, bullying in football takes on a different meaning than its social meaning to me. Think of it more as picking on the little guys. As far as going have ass. No i wouldn't  instruct my team to go half ass in a regular season contest. But in a scrimmage where clearly I have the dominate team. I would call of the dogs. Thats just me. In a game, then I think it is what it is. But a scrimmage against a AA team thats just picking on the little guys.

@ Nation did your team call off the dogs on the 3rd grade Bulldogs this weekend?  It's football a contact sport you play your best at all times.

Our boys were instructed not to go full speed against any 3rd team and hold your ground against the 4th grade. It was obvious to me that Tyaa White had the same approach.

If Jenks White wanna turn up in scrimmages then they are welcome to come to next season Bulldog Classic.

Raider Nation- I thought you were saying something different my apologies. I don't really think they were picking on the little guys and did call off the dogs. I saw them sub in players and also tell their boys to not talk and just play. I have been around football a long time, have helped with football camps, coached at different schools and what I saw was boys playing the game of football. Plus coaches trying to coach those boys up. I loved what I saw and think most of the top teams at any level play like Jenks White did against Glenpool. Anyways good luck to everyone and can't wait to watch a lot of teams this year!

Jenks White did you hear that? Maybe that would be a good thing for them next year. Like I said I know a lot of players and coaches over there and will let them know.

@ Nation quit it , lol. #7 broke on your number one D to about the 10, and from then on they couldn't get a snap off. Who tells their players stuff like that? "Don't go full speed" 😂😂😂😂. If they do they are setting them up to fail.

The young man is a very talented player he can play 4th. Grade ball. As far as the snap that that's not becuz of nothing we were doing. We were not going full speed. #7 probably can break one on us if we were in mid season form. He's that good. How is not going full speed setting up fór failure?

Come on Raider Nation you know what Insidescoop and I are both saying. You just like to play down things when it comes to your team. A few coaches on here like to do that lol.

Just observing and will comment. That AA team I know probably appreciated that work given to them at the scrimmage. I know if my talent is slightly less talented, I use that as a teaching tool and motivational moment. I think with kids its important that you don't turn off the killer instinct. If you stress we practice how we will play, then treat scrimmage no different. I don't think any head coach going into a scrimmage and say lets pile it on this team and make them feel bad. I am sure when you scoreboard a team in the season, you don't stop running your offense or take it easy. The key to coaching is consistency whether scrimmage, practice or a game your intensity should be the same. Once you change the team will see that and respond differently.

Sorry I haven't responded just woke up for the day.

I don't care at what level you've played, how long you've coached, where you have done either of those things there's always a time and a place. Would I ask my kids to go 75% or 50%? Absolutely not. They don't comprehend that concept quite yet. However, I was watching and they didn't rotate their players all that much. 44 was in almost every play. 1 I think is the other play maker was in the almost the entire time as well. The one point I do agree with you is that this should have never been a scrimmage set up. Period. Jenks White is a very good team, with a great coaching staff, I've never said anything other than that. This scrimmage did absolutely nothing for either team.
