Flex football
« on: May 23, 2019, 05:28:18 pm »
I just wanted to open up the conversation regarding Flex Football.  It is advertised everywhere in Tulsa.  It is designed as a tackle alternative for younger football players in the Fall (K-4th grade only). The idea was to support tackle and build a true feeder system.  Any thoughts?

I like the idea better than flag because it involves lineman. It can also be a great for developing the footwork and assignments for all positions rather than lining up in spread and covering passes only. Some players are not ready to jump right into tackle and don't get the one on one coaching during the tackle season to help them improve in the areas needed. I think it may affect some tackle numbers in early grades but increase the numbers in 5th-7th with players that can step in and contribute right away. I also like that it is backed by the NFL a league that isn't going anywhere and introducing a version of football that should help grow the game.

Flag numbers have only increased the past 4-5 years so converting over to Flex in lieu of flag seems like the right play.  I would argue that it will actually increase tackle numbers for grades from 3-7 .  As parents get used to the soft shell pads and the "contact" of flex the idea of tackle isn't that far fetched and then their kids will be asking to play tackle.
