08/13/2022 Scrimmages
« on: August 14, 2022, 09:49:15 am »
I couldn't focus super hard on all of the teams, but I will give it a shot because I was there all day and I did get to watch a bunch. For the 1st scrimmages of the year all of these teams left better than when they arrived and in the end that is the goal. Good or bad let us know what you thought. I was at Hilldale HS all day long.

                    Hilldale  HS

8 am-10 am

Bixby Blue
WOW! <<< This is an understatement! These guys showed up and looked in mid-season form. Let's talk about the elephant in the room because this kid could probably take down one.  #77 is an absolute MONSTER! For his size I felt like he moved extremely well and was making 2nd, 3rd, and looking for 4th blocks down field. Possibly the best I have seen for a kid his age at that size. When he hits someone they have to feel it because I felt it for them. Defensively he is almost unblockable demanding double teams which free up some of his amazing teammates.  Both #21 & #7 were flat out amazing as usual. My Hornets ran offense against these guys and although we have played them the past 2 seasons I was honestly just happy walk away from this one with only a few bruises lol. #7 hit my own son as hard as I have seen a kid hit the entire time I have been coaching. #21 is still running like Vick on Madden. Their QB looked better than I have seen him look before as he was slinging the ball all around to multiple receivers and in turn those receivers were making some great catches & moved well with the football afterwards. Whether it be offensively or defensively this Bixby Blue team is the real deal and an absolute JUGGERNAUT. They moved the ball at will against every team they faced and really put on a show against a Final 4 team from a year ago in what appeared to be a statement to the rest of the grade.. The last time I was even close to this impressed with a teams 1st scrimmage was the LC team that will be going into 8th grade this year as 3rd graders. Hats off to Coach Palmer and co. There are very few teams in this grade that have legitimate chance to dethrone these guys barring an unfortunate injury.. When I say very few I mean like or 4 teams tops and that may be being too generous.. There is a clear divide between them and most.. Great job with these boys! PS I will trade you my Topps 89' Ken Griffey Jr  Rookie card for #77 straight up! Just let me know when you want to make the deal!

BA Gold
Word is they were without their starting QB which is obviously a big deal for any of us. Take 1 player off of most of our teams and the adjustments we all have to make will cause a ripple effect that is hard for us adjust to. We had one of our top players out this week as well. All in all tho they are BA Gold, they have the speed to make any defense look foolish and especially if they get those guys to the edge or in space. They have some kids that will come downfield and hit you in the mouth, but against Bixby Blue the defense just looked like the rest of us. That isn't a shot at them at all because there are very few teams in the grade who will look good against Blue. My Hornets ran defense against them and you could tell they were working on a few things, but they did manage to punch it in on us once. Butler will have that line ready to go in no time. I didn't get to watch their other sets a great deal. I have no doubts that once BA Gold gets back to full strength they will no doubt find themselves back making a deep run in the Playoffs.

Jenks Maroon - These guys got some decent size and a few ballplayers of their own. Defensively their DL and LB's were nice. The coaches did a great job with them and I feel like they are going to be pretty solid going forward. My Hornets ran offense against these guys.

Sand Springs Gold - These guys have some potential the further they go. The coaches did a great job with these kids. My Hornets ran defense against them and I felt we gave them some different looks. I got to watch them run defense against Blue and they had a few nice moments. Made some tackles that showed they have potential to be a solid team as the season moves forward.

Coweta White - #24 is still a STUD! I thought he ran QB last year, but it looks they have him at RB this season and he is still a handful. Fast and a really tough runner. He doubles down on the other side of the ball as a nice defensive piece. The Coweta White coaches have done a good job with these boys and I have no doubt that they will be a tough out this year. My Hornets did not get to line up with Coweta as they are once again in our Division this year.

Hilldale - Nothing to see here, but I am pleased with where we are at this point in the season. Potential is nice, but only if it materializes. I am proud of the effort our boys gave yesterday and hopefully we will continue to progress. I am excited to see what we look like when we have all of our guys tho.

Not that anyone cares, but I will hop back on and eventually finish the other 3 sessions as I am able, but for now I need to rest my fingers. Did I tell everyone that Bixby Blue is pretty decent?  If not I meant too. Congratulations to everyone on a job well done. I am just happy the season is here! Go Hornets!

At the 8pm Catoosa scrimmage Bixby Red was pretty impressive.  Big and aggressive line play.  Looked good.

Very correct Shaffer I honestly don’t believe I have agreed with you more than this. Spot on with everything you said. You did leave a lot out about your team though they looked great imo, your offense was impressive against Bixby Blue we wish you well this year. Bixby Blue looked like they haven’t skipped a beat on offense we simply just weren’t ready but that will change. Jenks, coweta looked like they got bigger and in time will be great teams. Did not watch much of sands springs. All in all I wish all the teams the best of luck this season and hope we can make a run at it again.

Hilldale 10 am - 12 pm Session

I got to watch a few sets from most of these teams. Obviously I vested my attention to some more than others. None the less I will try to get something positive out for all teams.

Sapulpa - Sapulpa looked the part for sure and they have to be on a short list as one of the favorites to win AA this year. I will admit that I was a bit surprised to see them in AA after having made the Playoffs last year. They have great speed and run their offense extremely well. Defensively they found the football and pursued really well. No doubt a Preseason favorite to win AA1

BA Silver - I will admit I had a hard time keeping up with who was who out of these BA groups. All of the BA teams I saw had some good looking kids, but it was apparent like us all they were working on some things trying to figure out what they needed to fine tune. I didn't get to pay a great deal of attention to these guys, but from I can remember they competed well.

Collinsville Red - These guys are a tough and aggressive team. The kids play really hard. Every time they make a play defensively you are going to be aware of it. With lack of a better way of saying it these guys will just wear a bunch of teams down with their tenacity more so than anything IMO.

Coweta Black - These guys looked just as impressive as they did a year ago IMO. I actually wiffed on this one as I thought that they would compete for a Playoff spot. I would have no problem making that same prediction after what I saw had they not landed in that gauntlet of a Division known as D3. Their backs are nice and they run their offense well. I seen a little guy #4? He made a really nice run for a score where he bounced off of a would be tackler into a spin move and out ran 3 guys to the end zone. This team is fun to watch. I expect them to be a tough out for most teams.

Holland Hall - These guys have a bunch of good looking, athletic kids. Not a lot of size, but they have 2 of the fastest more electric backs in AA. Defensively they look like they were still trying to figure it out, but they no doubt are one of the better AA teams I got to see based on the athleticism alone. Nice little scheme to spread you out and make you decide what it is that you want to do exactly.

Hilldale  6 pm - 8 pm

Bartlesville Blue:
A Playoff team a year ago this Bruins team just keeps getting better. With #27 and a nice supporting cast they should give most teams fits. I didn't get to pay a good deal of attention these guys, but I can assure you that the speed is still there. Defensively they still swarm to the football well. Being in D2 i fully expect this Bruins team to compete for that 3rd and final Playoff spot. At the moment I got Bixby Red locked in the #2 spot, but we will get into that when I make my Preseason Playoff Predictions lol.

BA Black - You can basically copy and paste what I said about BA Silver here. I didn't get to focus on these guys a ton, but they did have some kids who looked the part out there. I expect them to only get better as the season goes along.

Bixby White - Along with Holland Hall these guys have me really intrigued after scrimmages. They either clearly want to throw the ball or really wanted to work on their passing game, but they threw a ton and the QB had a few throws that were gorgeous. 1 imparticular on a corner route where the WR made a heck of a catch while tightly covered. They really kinda mirrored HH in the sense that neither team had a ton of size, but they have some really good looking, athletic kids. The QB is quick and they spread you out where he runs a nice boot. Defensively they had a good showing as well. I was told that my buddy A. Wade took this team, but either I missed him or I was misinformed. Either way I think these guys have to get serious consideration to possibly win it all in AA this year. I liked watching this team.

Berryhill - This team right here has to be the clear favorites to win AA coming in IMO. They are a tough, physical group of kids with a nice mix of size and speed (Seriously I think they only breed 1 type of team at Berryhill because they all look the same). They blocked really well of the line and ran their offense just like it was supposed to be ran. They were working on some passing that appears to still be a work in progress, but you better pack your lunch in the middle. Boasting on of the best offensive and defensive lines in AA with what appears to be a great group of coaches these guys are 2 handfuls of trouble for any team on the opposing sideline.

McAlester - I didn't get to watch McAlester a ton, but they definitely looked a little different than they did a year ago. A nice mix of size and speed these guys should progress as the season goes on. They are in what I believe is the 2nd toughest A Division in D1. The top of this Division is pretty well set to me, but who finishes in that #4 spot is anyone's guess. I would consider that a victory over there.

Hilldale 8 pm - 10 pm

At this point I was pretty well drained and possibly hallucinating, but I did get to watch some.

Owasso Red - These Rams are coached by some high energy guys. 1 imparticular and he keeps these little dudes engaged. They try to mirror the enthusiasm which is always fun to watch. I didn't get to pay a ton of attention to these guys on the offensive side of the football, but defensively the made their way to the football nicely and seemed to tackle well.  They should be in that mix of teams who will be competing for that #4 spot in D1 Rules.

Jenks Silver - Once again another good looking group of kids here. These guys are a good little football team that may surprise some folks. They made a nice run in the PST a season ago and they looked to have used that finish and rode the momentum into this season. Being in D2 it would not surprise me at all if they ended up the #3 seed or better if they continue to trend upwards. They seem to have a good group of coaches and these kids have fun. In turn they are fun to watch. Keep these Jenks team on your radar.

Skiatook - I didn't get to focus on these guys a whole lot. Last I heard was that they lost their QB from a year ago to Sperry. That is always a big loss, but I have no doubt that these coaches will get these kids headed in the right direction. Being in D2 a Playoff spot is totally up for grabs to the right team.

Lincoln Christian- What can you not say about this group? Great coaching and players. I may have been have asleep, but they didn't appear as big as they were a year ago. May have had some kids gone or maybe I am full of it. That little QB sure is a player tho. Runs the ball super hard for his size. Fun group to watch that is going to present some fun matches for us fans of these kids in a stacked D2 Tul. Got my popcorn ready.

Stillwater - I got my first real look at these guys and I was impressed. They have a nice back and the kids seem to run their offense well. I didn't get to focus on them a whole lot on the defensive side of the ball, but I just remember thinking they were a solid team. Being in the D1 Tul will make a bit tougher for these guys, but I think they could have been a Playoff spot out West. They will present some intriguing matchups in D1.

Union Red - These guys have a nice mix of size upfront and seemed to get better as the scrimmage went on. They had some nice ads on both sides of the ball and the coaches did a great job with them. I expect them to be a tough out in AA 2.

As always with me all in fun and best of luck to all of you guys going forward. I just pray for all these kids safety and safe travels for all of you traveling this season. I am just trying to get some chatter going. I see a bunch of lurkers lol.

I guess I could throw in my 2 cents worth about the Catoosa Scrimmages if no one else will. Glenpool was the best-looking team out there. Muskogee looked almost as good. Bixby Red was solid. Bartlesville White and BA White are gonna give people problems. Rejoice has a running back that is the real deal he runs downhill juked a few out of their shorts and ran over a couple. He found the end zone several times against some pretty good teams.

Rushing that was an error on my part while trying to make post througbout the course of the day. I made an admission to my mistake in a separate post in the same thread. You guys are Top 10 no doubt, but my team has never been a Top 10 team in this grade yet here I stand. It is what it is. I see a lot of people lurking and yet very little speaking. The Forum is just that, people love it, but don't want people to know how much. Some people get real offended when you don't put them in a Top 10. Mine is never malicious tho. I kinda pride myself on keeping it real.

In 2-3 weeks this top 10 will look way different than it does now. There are 2 really tough divisions and some good teams that will get left out of the playoffs.

Same here, not sure why I left TYAA Blue out but y'all are definitely a top 10 team.  Honestly, I'm usually more of a lurker than poster on here, but tried to get some chatter going last year in this grade but not many want to join in.
