Week 2 scrimmages
« on: August 23, 2020, 07:07:33 am »
Once again there were some great teams out this weekend. Some of the teams that didn't do great last year have really improved so don't get caught sleeping. I find it interesting how differently coaches participate in the scrimmages. I saw a few teams that appeared to only play their best players. One team in particular was getting in the other teams backfield every play before the play could develop. They brought in the other 7 players and almost got scored on then pulled them out after 2 plays. The last team we played ran a "Hurry up " offense that was more like snap the ball before even their line was set. This proved to be very effective as we were playing kids in positions that they had never played before. I had a lineman hurt his leg and as I'm helping him off the field and trying to bring in a replacement they scored a touchdown. Make no mistake my team got legit beat by a few teams. My question for a few of the others would be did you really "win" the scrimmage? Finally got to see Lincoln Christian all I'm gonna say is we have a lot of work to do this week.

Scrimmages are just glorified practices. Most teams just working on things and moving players around. It all counts next week!

Scrimmages are good to get a live look, but games are a totally different ball game.

Scrimmages are about getting your kids ready for games. That’s why when we’re on offense we go as quick as we can because that’s what we will do in the game. We will go as quick as the official will let us go!

It just seemed to me like you might get a better idea of how your offense really looks if you gave the defense enough time to line up or even have 8 players on the field. I'm pretty sure in a real game the ref would have stopped play for my kid that was injured. Good luck coach.

Coach if we ran a play while you had a player injured you have my sincerest apology. The ref or nobody brought that to my attention.

As far as letting the defense get set we go fast for a reason. We work on that daily and it’s something these kids have learned last 2 years. We went as fast as the official let’s us go and that’s our plan for this year. Once the official marks it ready for play we run the play. At anytime if you would have asked me to slow it down I would have. I also asked twice if you guys were ready. For us going fast in a scrimmage is practice for what we hope we can do in a game.

Best of luck coach!

Catoosa Black - First scrimmage we went against Catoosa Black and we were on Offense, we were able to move down the field and score, but they have some boys that are starting to put it all together. I think it will take a little time to get to that point, but just like last year they will be ready by Playoffs.

Catoosa Green - The boys got better from last week and I was very proud of them, that's all I can say.

Bixby Blue - They have a #20 on the Defensive Line that shoots gaps very well, but not only does he do that he also keeps his eyes on the ball and gets to the ball quick. Of course Palmer moves side line to side line very well, but they have a couple more players that can disrupt plays as well. This year I think defensively they will definitely be better. Offensively they pretty much scored when they wanted to on us. We had a couple of good tackles, but I'm pretty sure they were trying to develop a few of their players that needed attention at that point.

Hilldale - We had the opportunity to play Shaffers team again this year. I made a few changes and moved a couple kids around and it seemed to be effective. Seemed to be back and forth with Hilldale, they would move the ball and we would make stops. I think both teams need more time to be competitive in big games, but I think both teams will also do good this year.

Berryhill Gold - Berryhill Gold had a couple good players that played off the blocks well. They have a big boy I believe #90 that was getting through pretty easily and disrupting the plays. Corners play the run pretty well and get by lead blockers or maybe we just don't lead block well, but we did manage to find the endzone a few times. We practiced our QB reading the pass/run option so I was mainly focused on the pressure of the cornerbacks and defensive ends more than the LB's. The defensive ends did a good job of pressuring and the corners did a good job on coming up on the run and defending the pass once the coach's figured out what we were doing.

Collinsville Blue - Good number of players with 11. Blue ran a nice 3-Man front with the LB firing in on strong side B Gab. I just think it opens their Defensive line up so much with how they run the 3 man front, but the LB pressure is undeniable if you try to run in that gap.  The problem is the huge gap it leaves on the single man side. The Defensive ends were on their heels most of the time and corners were waiting for the ball to get to them. Their kids stayed in good position and once they start getting on their toes and attacking the ball they will be a tough little team.

Collinsville Red - I only saw 9 players on this team so I'm not sure where the other 1-2 are, but this team ran mostly I formation with lots of bootlegs. Bootlegs seemed a little deep causing them to have shorter gains than they should have had. Their linemen looked young and smaller than most, but they execute their plays well, I just think they are lacking a little speed. Every now and then that QB gave a glimpse that he is faster when he gets to run straight, but overall I think if they take away the pass plays and focus on their formations and lead blocking then they will be fine.

Claremore Black - 11 Players - They have some big boys on this team and they also have a RB that will hit the holes hard and keep those feet moving. He is a good shifty back with great acceleration. Between the QB and RB they will put some points up this year. Defensively they ran a 4 man front and coach was on them hard about firing off that ball and I have known their coach for a bit and he is a great coach. He will have the boys ready for Saturday.

Berryhill Blue - 10 players with some big boys as well. They started off with their tall kid at QB and ended up with another playing which in IMO I think it was for the best as the taller kid is still learning to run with those long legs. This team has some developing to do, but they aren't a bad team by any means.

Lincoln Christian - I didn't get a good look at them as a few friends stopped by and said hi, but from what I can tell they are going to be tough. They can run well and throw well too. Defensively they had a few mishaps, but that's expected this time of year. They're one of the top teams out their still and they have a good looking bunch.

Sand Springs Black - This team is going to be tough all year long. They have a very shifty RB that does a very good job reading body language and making a cut off the momentum of the defenders body. Has quick feet that can stop and go at any speed. They also have another RB that has speed and hits holes hard. Linemen seemed to be firing off the ball well it just seemed like they were scoring at will. I did get to watch them play Muskogee's Offense and they did a good job until Muskogee started throwing the ball downfield on them. This is something that all of the teams will have an issue with at this age unless you can apply more pressure on the receiver or QB.

Muskogee - Muskogee has one heck of a QB. He can read run/pass, he can scramble when in a bad situation, he is very smart with the ball, and he can pass the ball very well. The ball zips to the receiver very fast and accurate. I was wondering if they were going to be able to catch it with how hard he was throwing it, but they sure did. I believe #7 from last year was on the receiving end of that. Muskogee has talent all over the field on defense and offense. I think this team will be a team to beat when playoffs come if not the team to beat. There are a couple of very good very well coached teams out there and the favorite to win is wide open this year.

Broken Arrow Platinum - Definitely saw an Improvement from last week. This team is just really young and hard to compete when your as young as they are, but they show up and they play with heart and that's all you can ask from them.

Broken Arrow Black - I see they still have #36 out running side line to side line. They have a good RB as well, reads the field well and has some speed with some shift to him. Very good all around runner. Looked like they were letting TD's on the outsides, once they clean that up it should allow #36 to be able to breath a little and focus on keeping the middle cleaned up.

Owasso Red - Those boys were small and looks like they lost their tall kid from last year as I didn't see him out there. They do look better than last year, but again another young team and maybe a long season for them.

Didn't see Skiatook and wasn't able to make it to the Broken Arrow White scrimmages as I had to leave. - Skiatook heard they were at the TYAA Scrimmages and I didn't hear about BA White this week, but with what they had last year and the add on on of Breedlove they will be a top contender this year again.

Good Luck this weekend and hope everyone has a great week.

“Strategy” hey coach, you got collinsville blue and red mixed up.

Collinsville Blue, you are correct. We only had 9 players this past Saturday, one was out of town, we have 10 in total When all together. Thanks for the break down on offense. We are definitely small all the way around, the pass plays we’re an experiment after seeing so many second graders week 1 scrimmage making awesome pass and catches.

I don’t have much breakdown myself as I only seen the teams we went against.

L.C. Much like their 6th graders, BIG FAST and everything a football team trains to be.

Claremore Super tall QB who can throw, and super fast back who can run.

B.A. (don’t remember the color) a lot of skilled quick players, defense played as a team and always had 3/4/5 boys in on the tackle.

Good luck to everyone entering week 1

My bad, I was counting them when everyone was warming up. Seemed one of the teams had a hurt player with a boot on his foot, but they may have also been Berryhill. As far as the pass plays go I completely understand that as we have been experimenting as well and to be honest I could look at my team and give 100 different things we need to stop doing and start doing. Nice to see Collinsville with a couple teams out there. Good Luck this weekend.
