Legit MM Question
« on: August 25, 2016, 02:23:19 pm »
I have noticed some teams with some great offensive lines and amazing centers.  At what point can the middle linebacker engage the center.  I agree with the safety of the rule but some of these centers are lil studs and blowing up MLB.  When center hikes ball and fires out can MLB then blow or attempt to blow center up?

So you mean at what point can the LB make contact with the Center or what can they do to protect themselves against the center?

Yes that is a better way of stating my question.  At what point can contact be made?

Once the center is an upright position I believe they are fair game. It is at the initial snap that they are protected I believe.

Ok good.  I like the rule especially for inexperienced players.  For Great teams like Bixby Red who block really well from the shotgun and has an amazing center, I believe in being physical with the center.  He is basically the QB and just like a pass rush you have to get him off his game.  If center is worried about being attacked the snaps start coming a little out of control.  Just making sure I can send my MLB to blow him up the minute the ball is snapped.  Not being harsh I know that word sounds harsh just best word to describe what we intend to do, so making sure it is legal.

Oh I hear ya. You may post this question to the Director Of Officials to confirm exactly when they are available for contact. On the "Ask A Ref" part of the Forum.

Just make sure your MLB is not going any closer than the 3 yards BEFORE the ball is snapped. We had teams creepin up on the QB's cadence and when the ball was snapped, the LB was literally already 1 yard or less away from the center ready to shoot through. Definitely not allowing adequate time for the centers head to come up and be in an upright position to make the block.

I don't think you can ever "blow up" the center.  The center is protected.  You can't blitz the mlb & directly hit the center.  If the center is running a QB sneak & he's running behind the center- then I guess you could run thru the block there.  Or if they are coming out at a angle to block the mlb from the 6 hole, etc.  Then you can "run thru" the block.  Just really apply common sense.  The ref can tell when people tell their mlb to go hit a center.  It's really a good rule at this age.  These boys need to learn to get a play off & run a offense.  This 2nd grade stuff is just to teach them the basics.  So I like the center protection rule.

Before I ask this question, I want to say I do believe in calling off the dogs so to speak when the game is out of hand or towards the end of the game. That being said, can points indeed determine division championships or tournament seeding? The referee told our OC to lay off with 4 or 5 min remaining and that's fine, I have no issue laying off by any means but I would like to get the 28 if possible in case it is a factor at season end. No other reason. Is this something I should bring up with the INFC? I think our refs did a great job and not trying to cause problems. We had the ball one time in the first half for one play that went for a TD and believe we definitely could've scored a couple more although I would've posted the 28 point margin. No disrespect intended to Edmond. Great coaches, hard working group
Of kids that fought till the end. Much respect

No Silver wolf. The draw for MM playoff is random.  Scores are not taken by the INFC for first or 2nd grade. I understand getting the 28 but being a official if we feel the score is out of hand. We're not going to let you run no huddle or call timeouts at the end of the game when it's clear the game is over.

Thank you for the information sir. I understand exactly what you are saying and very much respect that. For the record, we were not running no huddle, nor were we calling time outs. We may not have got 2 more scores. I'm just going by how the flow of the game was going at the time and how well our defense was paying. I would've liked for our offense to get more work in. My coaching staff will always coach our kids to win with class and lose with class. I very much appreciate that the officials are doing this. It is my hopes, the same is asked of all teams when trying to put up 50 or 60 in a game. That definitely has not been the case in years past so thank you for that.
