Wedge Blocking
« on: September 25, 2019, 01:28:12 am »
We have been penalized in the past for having our HB push the qb from behind as he gets stacked up at the LOS. This was last season,  although I was told that was the rule up through the 7th grade.

Can you clarify? Is this a penalty, and if so what is the yardage lost? I saw a team run wedge consistently on film and it was never called, with the go ahead TD scored in the final 2 minutes on a wedge play where not 1, not 2, but 3 RB all ran into the back of the qb to "push the pile". Just want to make sure I'm not missing out on an advantage for my boys.

Thanks

By NFHS rule (including High School) you cannot help the runner - you can block everyone around him and push the linemen that are bunched up with the runner.
If you have video of the play where you were penalized I would love to get a copy and use it in our training video to the officials - send to bkelleyok@gmail.com if you have it.

I wasn't\penalized this season, but I saw a play that was clear as the bright blue sky in a crucial situation not get called, so I wondered if something had changed.  Thanks for your responses.  If I can figure out how to post the video clip of the play im describing I will.

State the grade and the play number from front row. Bobby can look at it

Play 76 in the 5th grade, BA Black @ Lincoln Christian. They do it on every wedge all game, however that one was the nail in the coffin which to me just adds salt to the wound.

Yeah, I think there are four, maybe five plays in this game that they do this.

Sent this video out to a number of varsity officials and most agreed that this was not helping the runner.  The case can made that the blockers are just pushing the pile forward and not the runner directly.
To be honest, a couple of them thought it was.  What I always tell the offense is that they can push the pile forward, push the blockers forward, push the defense forward but they cannot push the runner directly forward.
I tried to attach the video to the post but it says the file is too large - here is a dropbox link to it:  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/dmvhfwjy4l9k9pl/AABa13vrxrf4phwLoE08-U3pa?dl=0

Let me know if that doesn't work.

The first back literally hits the qb square. I’m not sure how any official could see it different. However this isn’t a hill I want to die on, and in all our games this season the officials have done a great job so that’s not my intent either. Just wanted clarification, and now it’s clear as mud! Lol

Fair enough, definitely see your point but it was also argued that it was a touchdown before he touched anyone?  I will work on a consensus on the main issue (helping the runner) from the association and confirm it for you asap. For now it is going to be a judgement call (as a lot of calls are)
You are welcome to point it out to the officials before the game so it is fresh on their mind :)

You can never push the runner just like you can never hold.  My kids know this but believe it or not they make mistakes.  Just glad they didn’t hang 31 on us after first two plays looked like they were.  We will get back to work and continue cleaning up our mistakes.  Thanks for the critiques.
