Two questions
« on: September 20, 2021, 06:13:30 pm »
First question. How is a block in the back downfield assessed? I’m asking in particular if it occurs downfield when the play is well beyond the first down marker? I thought it was a spot foul, but in our game the refs moved the ball back from the original line of scrimmage and we replayed the down.

Second Question. When an offensive lineman puts his hand in the dirt, is there any way to come “un set”? Or do they have to stay perfectly still until the play is started?

block in the back beyond the line of scrimmage should be penalized from the spot of the foul assuming there were no other fouls on the play.

technically anyone on the interior (tackle to tackle) once they put their hand on the ground cannot pick it up.  Not saying this is enforced all the time at the younger levels but if we are to the point of calling a cadence, then they definitely should not be removing their hand from the ground.  younger the kids the less strict we would likely be on this.

I plan on it Bobby! Bartmann been recruiting me for the last two years.

I knew I was right on the spot foul. Appreciate the follow up. We scored on a screen pass on 2nd and 30 anyway but it stuck in my head to ask you

Excellent!  I will add that to my email I send out to the officials weekly.  We do have a number of new officials working out there so be patient with them, they are getting on the job experience :)
