Ref Shortage
« on: October 07, 2019, 01:13:01 pm »
I stole this from MAC on the 5th grade forum, because I think it's something that all coaches/parents need to read.

Here is an article written about the issue we are facing right now with not having enough referees, and the issue starts with youth ball (coaches and parents).

https://www.tulsaworld.com/sports/high-school/guerin-emig-civil-action-if-we-treat-high-school-football/article_90dc5a2c-2b97-56c6-b755-8d1d8de5b630.html

I think the coaches have a responsibility to do what they can to help this situation. Here are some of the things I’ve seen work:
1)   Assign only 1 coach to DISCUSS (not scream) plays with the refs. Having 4-5 coaches screaming at once will only make it worse. Assign 1 coach (normally the head coach) on the team to be the communicator.
2)   Each school program (or even each team coach) should ask the parents to not yell at the refs and leave it to the head coach. Bad/missed calls are going to happen. Parents screaming at the refs will only make things go from bad to worse. It would be great if emails to parents about this went out this week from each team!
3)   Show appreciation! What would happen if after each game, both the coaches and the players shook the hand of the refs and thanked them? Put your emotions in check and lead by example and thank them for doing a job that you wouldn’t want to do. Teach the kids to do the same.

We all know that calls are going to be missed, or called incorrect. Coaches are going to feel “cheated”. Things are going to happen that are out of your control, but let’s not put our emotions before doing the right thing. Let’s make it a point to make these guys feel appreciated, as they should be!

If you have other suggestions… please share.
