Onside kicks

What is the rule on onside kicks? Can you make contact before 10 yards?  Is the receiving team protected before 10 yards?

if the return team chooses to advance from their position inside the 10-yard gap the player(s) can engage the kick-off team and vice versa; however, the ball must travel 10-yards before the kick-off team may touch the ball, OR the return team must touch the ball within that first ten yards before the kick-off team can touch the ball without the kick-off getting penalized.

Nope.  We had a kid come up inside the 10 yard box and got smoked.  15 yard penalty for hitting the player.  Talked to ref said you can't hit kid and blow them up.  Crazy

This is absolutely an illegal act.  The kicking team, may not initiate contact With the receiving team until the ball has gone 10 yards or the receivers first initiate the contact. The actual rule reference in the rule book is rule 9-3-8 and the text is below.  Technically an early block is a 10 yard foul, but if it's determined to be a personal foul, 15 is warranted and from your description of "smoked" I'd probably lean toward 15.

ART. 8 . . . No member of the kicking team shall initiate contact to (block) an opponent on a free kick until:
a.    The legal kick has traveled 10 yards;
b.    The kicking team is eligible to recover a free-kicked ball; or
c.    The receiving team initiates a block within the neutral zone.

Just replied on the other thread on the onside kicks as well.
Just because the kid comes inside the 10 yard neutral zone does not mean the kicking team can smoke him.  He has to be initiating a block.

I have seen this called so many different ways this season.  Almost every team onside kicks in youth football.  I would like for the coaches and the refs all to be on the same page. I had a player today get injured waiting on the ball from a onside kick.  The player was waiting on the ball in a crouched position to scoop up the ball when he was hit by a full speed The player from the kicking team.  My player had come into the 10 yard box.

I really don't care how the refs are going to call the rules covering onside kicks, just so that it is the same each week.  It is a very vulnerable position to have a player not able to protect himself being hit by another who has a 10 yard running start.    I think that the refs are trying to do a good job, it just needs to be a standard so each team, coach, and ref are on the same page.

INFC removed the cut block I believe after last season for safety reasons, and I think this is the next issue "onside kicks" that needs to be addressed for the refs, and safety concerns for the players.

Well playing broken arrow tonight in haskell. We are blowing up the onside kick  with no penalties so far.  Guess it is just who you get to call  the games.  Hope that kid from ba is ok.

Are you talking about #80 that speared the BA Kid?  There was a flag down for that one right?  If you have film on it please send it to me.

BobStoops, I mean SamBradford, I now know why your previous user names were blocker or deleted, I have watched you complain over and over the last few years on this forum, never said anything as I wasn't at the games and didn't know the true story on your whining, but now I do - you know zero about football or maybe you are just a troll.

First, your post can be looked at as if you are from Haskell, but lets be clear you are from BA, don't even care if you try to deny it, you are.

Haskell did one semi-onside kick that went about 21 yards, all others were kicked deep, BA did an onside kick EVERY time (and they blew up no one within 10 yards), how in the world can Haskell blow up anyone inside 10 yards when they NEVER attempted a true onside kick?

On the one kick that only went 21 yards, no one was touched under 10 yards as the ball went quickly to the second line of returners, Haskell did get a penalty for a kid spearing on the tackle on this kickoff (again, 21 yards down field), which was deserved.  EVERY kick by Haskell after this one was deep!

You lost all credibility if you ever had any.

Officiating was not an issue this game, unless you came expecting two hand touch.

I coached the BA game vs Haskell. In the kick that is being talked about our kid went down to pick the ball up and his knee touched the ground. #80 (great player and incredibly fast) basically launches after the ball at the same time our kick picks it up and gets up to run with his knee touching the ground. It was a penalty and was called but honestly it happened so fast the hit beat the refs to the whistle. Had he laid on the ground and got smoked it would have been different. He played to the whistle, we all teach it, sometimes you get a penalty for playing hard and deal with it, I wouldn't want to teach a kid like that not to play hard. Anyways supr game and good luck Haskell, our BA Silver 6th grade team had a tremendous season, I'm proud to part of it!

Thanks for the clarification footballdad and Edad.  Sounds like it was just a football play that was penalized correctly.
When people come here with legitimate concerns I will certainly take a look at film or do some research to find out what happened.
