Questionable call
« on: September 22, 2018, 05:38:54 pm »
In our game we had a call that I’m not sure if it’s right or not. But there was a pass thrown and we intercepted the ball and clearly we have it but the official states that both receiver and defender came down with the ball simultaneously and he gave the points to the offense. My question is if the defender has it wouldn’t it be a turn over? I didn’t know that Football had tie goes to the runner like baseball.

Simultaneous catch goes to the offense.

As stated, the rule (7-5-4 in NFHS rules book) says:  "If a forward pass is simultaneously caught by two opponents, the ball becomes dead and belongs to the passing team."

In practice, we try to avoid this by determining who FIRST had possession or who MOST has possession, but sometimes that's not possible and we have to go with simultaneous.  Especially in INFC where there are only 3 officials and typically none are right on top of a pass at the time of possession first occurred.
