Mercy Rule
« on: September 01, 2016, 04:26:58 am »
Page 21 Article 8. I don't understand why they have this in the rule book. It talks about the clock being ran at normal unless the losing team is wanting running clock. Not once have i seen a official ask the losing team if they want a running clock. The gripe I have is Mighty Mites the game is already so short and the mercy Rule is 28. So when you get to 28 it runs through everything Xtra point, lining the ball up for new possion, that team calling a play. Your talking 45 min games for 3 days of practice at 1hour and half.

In mighty mite the clock is running in all those scenarios except if there is a score on the try and in the last 2 minutes of the game so overall it is not costing or saving anyone much time at all.  The point of it is that the score board is not continually running up.   Also in 15+ years of calling this I have only seen one coach refuse to let the clock run after the mercy rule was hit.  Most want to get out of there to lessen the chances of a kid getting hurt in a game that is already decided.

Then why is it worded in the rule book like that. What's the point? That's what I'm getting at

The coach can keep it a normal running clock if he wants.  Like I said, most let it run.
