Intentional Grounding
« on: November 03, 2018, 04:50:09 pm »
We had intentional grounding called twice in a 7th grade game and the officials gave them a five yard penalty from the previous spot with a loss of down. I thought this was a spot foul with loss of down. The spot was significantly beyond five yards. When I asked the officials they said that in the INFC spot fouls were marked from the line of scrimmage rather than the spot of the foul (holding and block in the back).  They weren’t 100% sure how to treat grounding but went with five yards from line of scrimmage. Just curious what the INFC rule is.

I spoke to them about it.  It should be a 5 yard penalty from the spot of the foul and loss of down.
They got it confused with the INFC rule that says penalties on the offense in the backfield is enforced from the previous spot but that rule does not include penalties that have a loss of down with them.  I will send out a memo about it along with chop-blocking from the other post on the message board.  Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for the clarification.  It had no impact on outcome and they did a good job communicating and managing the game.
