Covering a receiver
« on: September 22, 2019, 01:15:49 pm »
In a few words, how aggressive can a 4th grade defender be with a receiver that is trying to catch a ball. Have experienced some inconsistencies.  Trying to teach my defenders and receivers what to expect. Thank you ( One official told me the defender could actually face the receiver with arms up in the air like a basketball player with no regard for the ball)

Pass interference requires contact.  So “face guarding” is not a foul without contacting the receiver.
As far as how aggressive, hard to answer without seeing a play. It seems one of the hardest things for the coaches to understand is that the defense has the same rights to the ball as the offense.  There can be fairly significant contact but if it’s an incidental result to both players making legitimate plays on the ball and there will be much more latitude given.  Also, once the defender has established his position, It becomes the offensive players responsibility to avoid contact with the defender, not the defenders responsibility to get out of the way.

Thanks for the prompt answer. I know its a difficult question to answer in an email. I appreciate the response. I get it, its a tough one. I will say that 98% of the refs we have had this year have done a great job. No complaints here.....yet...Lol.
