5 yard contact
« on: November 06, 2022, 12:20:21 am »
Is it allowed to make contact with the first 5 yards if the ball hasn’t been released? Like the DB jamming the WE, a linebacker checking a TE releasing on a route etc as long as it’s within 5 yards of the line of scrimmage?

No that is not a rule in NFHS - you can jam the receiver (no 5-yard rule) but if the ball is in the air it can be pass interference.  When I say can be, if the QB throws the ball to the other side of the field a little contact on the opposite side could be ignored.

Thank you for the clarification. I like to know the rules to teach the kids correctly. We’ve been teaching the boys in the first 5 yards you can make contact as long as it’s not in the air. 😬😬😬Sorry middle school coaches you’ll have to fix that. Lol

Good topic, I learned a lot on this topic years ago.. you can take a receiver down before a ball is in the air 15 yards down the field if you want all the way through college

not sure what you mean by take a receiver down, that was not in the thread above.
tackling a receiver before the pass would likely be defensive holding.

I wasn’t talking about tackling, I’m talking about hand fighting before the ball is in the air. Per previous conversations with you there is no penalty in NFHS even if the hand fighting results in the receiver going to the ground if the ball is still in the QB’s hand.

Anyway, my kid is in school ball these days so I don’t care, was just enjoying sharing some football knowledge you had passed on to me years ago.

P.s. looks like my old account stopped working for some mysterious reason so I’m posting from this account now.
