Defensive cut blocking...
« on: November 06, 2019, 09:23:15 pm »
6th grade football.
In one playoff game on the west side of the state I asked an official if a defender can lunge into the legs of the offensive line, and if that is the same thing as a cut block. The official said that no its the defender just creating a pile. Ok.
Then the same team playing another playoff game except this time on the east side did the same thing - lunge into the legs of the offensive line - and got flagged twice for cut blocking.

So Is there a difference? Was one official right and another wrong; if so which?

Would definitely have to see the plays.  These blocks at the LOS in close line play are legal by NFHS rules, however the INFC has a special exception to the rule making all low blocks illegal even in line play.   It’s always possible some officials aren’t aware of all the INFC exceptions.

Also, The linemen are allowed to “grab grass” and hold their position, but not drive directly into the legs of the opponent.  It’s a tough distinction and can be a matter of interpretation and judgement.  Could have been a matter of one play was much more aggressive than the other, or different officials just saw it differently.

Can someone post the exact rule?
I thought the defensive player can't initiate contact into the legs of the blocker, but they can get through a gap bear crawling.  The defensive player has just as much right to the space in a gap as the offense.  You just can't initiate into the legs of the offensive blocker.

An offensive or defensive player on the field of play including inside the free
blocking zone shall not initiate a clip or block below the waist of an opposing
player.

Chop blocks take two blockers to execute and are illegal everywhere on the
field, including in the free blocking zone. A chop block is a combination block
by two or more teammates against an opponent other than the runner, with
or without delay, where one of the blocks is low (at the knee or below) and one
of the blocks is high (above the knee).
